Leathernecks Fall in Season Opener

WIU back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Green Bay.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill –The Western Illinois women's tennis team fell 4-0 in their season opener to SIUE Saturday (Jan. 26) evening on the road.

In doubles play, Mia Melnizki and Anouk Maajong dropped 6-2 to begin the match. The duo of Laura Ballesteros and Megan Tagaloa lost 6-0 to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

The Leathernecks battled in singles play but were unable to rally a comeback as SIUE won three straight singles matches. Ana Bjelica owned a one set advantage, but the match was left unfinished in No. 2 singles.

Melnizki fell to Alina Muteanu 6-0, 6-2 in No. 1singles, while Ballesteros lost 6-1, 6-2 in No. 5 singles to give SIUE a 3-0 edge. The Cougars clinched the season opener after Nicole Gomez defeated Maajong 6-2, 6-1 in No. 3 singles. 

Western continues play tomorrow with a trip to Milwaukee for a match against Green Bay, first serve is set for 10 a.m.
