Men's Soccer Heads to Valparaiso

Leathernecks aim to rebound away from home on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois men's soccer is on the road for a weekend matchup at Valparaiso on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: 
The Western Illinois men's soccer team (1-4-1) fell to Northern Illinois (4-2-0) 1-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

Northern Illinois jumped out to an early lead in the 13th minute when Anthony Markanich sent a cross to Diego Sanz for the header. Tim Trilk ranged over to save a shot from Kevin Rodriguez in the 36th minute and six minutes later another shot by Rodriguez was blocked as the Leathernecks trailed 1-0 at halftime.
 
The first shot from Western Illinois came on a header by Jamison Kozar that was blocked in the 61st minute. Four minutes later, Daniel Kadima missed high in an attempt to tie the match. Trilk made his fourth save of the match stopping a shot from Markanich in the 86th minute. The Leathernecks did not have a shot on goal and their last chance came in the 89th minute on a shot wide left from Cesar Cosio. The Huskies held on to win 1-0 as they outshot Western Illinois 13-4.  
 
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS: 
Valparaiso currently sits at 2-3-0 overall after senior defender Alex Brown scored in the 90th minute to lift the Crusaders past Milwaukee 1-0. Their three losses all came to Power-5 opponents including Marquette, Northwestern and Wisconsin. Valpo defeated the Leathernecks 5-2 in Macomb last season, but Western Illinois leads the all-time series 18-11-2.

Mike Avery is in his second season as the Crusaders head coach and is in the program leader in wins with 84. Junior forward Michael Marchionna is one of the most well-rounded players on the Valpo roster scoring a goal along with two assists this season. Senior forward Rafael Mentzingen is expected to come out firing as he has taken a team-high 26 shots.

LOOKING AHEAD: 
The Leathernecks return home against IUPUI on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
