Men's Soccer Plays Host to Milwaukee in Home Opener

The Leathernecks are back in Macomb seeking their first victory of the season on Aug. 26 at 5 p.m.

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois men's soccer heads into the home opener seeking its first win of the season by playing host to Milwaukee on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 5 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Western Illinois men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw in the season opener at Oakland on Friday (Aug. 24). The Leathernecks (0-0-1) led until the 90th minute but recovered to keep the score tied through two overtimes.

Daniel Kadima helped create a chance in the 33rd minute but his shot was corralled by the goalkeeper. Oakland nearly missed a goal right before half in the 45th minute as Neobsa Popovic's shot connected the top of the crossbar for a scoreless tie at halftime.

Western Illinois broke the ice in the 73rd minute when Xavier Brown beat the keeper to the left side and punched it into the back of the net for the first Leatherneck goal of the season. The Leathernecks led 1-0 heading into the final minute of regulation but Napoleon Outlaw III tallied the equalizer for the Golden Grizzlies off a rebound and put it past Trilk to send the match to overtime 1-1. The Leathernecks were outshot 5-0 in both overtimes and Trilk made two crucial saves to preserve the 1-1 draw.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS:
Milwaukee opens up the season in Macomb following a 10-5-4 campaign in 2017. The Panthers swept their preseason slate by defeating Loyola Chicago 1-0 (Aug. 14) and by edging Wisconsin-Parkside 2-1 (Aug. 22). Milwaukee beat Western Illinois 1-0 in the 2017 season opener at Engelmann Stadium.

Kris Kelderman enters his seventh season as the head coach of the Panthers and holds a 52-44-17 record at the helm. Junior forward Evan Conway led the way with eight goals and 20 points last season off 20 shots on goal.

LOOKING AHEAD:
The Leathernecks are in the middle of four straight home games including their next contest against Green Bay in Macomb on Friday, Aug. 31 at 3 p.m.
