Leathernecks Play Oakland to 1-1 Draw

Xavier Brown scores his first collegiate goal.

ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Western Illinois men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw in the season opener at Oakland on Friday (Aug. 24). The Leathernecks (0-0-1) led until the 90th minute but recovered to keep the score tied through two overtimes.

"Good first road game for our squad," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "I'm a bit disappointed we didn't get all three points but we didn't fold after giving up the lead in the last minute which shows we have some grit. It was exciting to see Xavier get his first collegiate goal as well."

Paul Kirdorf fired the first shot on goal of the season as both teams felt each other out to start the first half. Starting in goal again for the Leathernecks, Tim Trilk recorded a save on a slicing shot by Napoleon Outlaw III.

Daniel Kadima helped create a chance in the 33rd minute but his shot was corralled by the goalkeeper. Oakland nearly missed a goal right before half in the 45th minute as Neobsa Popovic's shot connected the top of the crossbar that forced a scoreless tie at halftime.

Western Illinois broke the ice in the 73rd minute when Xavier Brown beat the keeper to the left side and punched it into the back of the net for the first Leatherneck goal of the season. The Leathernecks led 1-0 heading into the final minute of regulation but Outlaw III tallied the equalizer off a rebound and put it past Trilk to send the match to overtime 1-1.

The Purple and Gold was outshot 5-0 in both overtimes and Trilk made two crucial saves to preserve the 1-1 draw.

The Leathernecks return to Macomb on Sunday, August 26 for the home opener against Milwaukee at 5 p.m.
