McGuire, McShane Featured on MVFC Preseason Team

Sean McGuire (QB) and Steve McShane (RB) were picked second team offense on the MVFC preseason lists.

MACOMB, Ill. –  The Missouri Valley Football Conference will be unveiling its preseason lists throughout the week. Its preseason poll was announced Monday (July 30), and recognitions continued Tuesday (July 31) with offensive all-conference selections. League coaches, sports information directors, and local media named six Western Illinois Leathernecks to an all-conference team with three receiving first team recognition.

Sean McGuire (QB) and Steve McShane (RB) were picked second team offense, ahead of the defensive list which will be announced Wednesday (Aug. 1). The two are coming off of stellar junior campaigns that will be etched in the Leatherneck record books for years to come.

Western keeps consistency in the quarterback position as McGuire is slated to line up under center for the third straight season. His name can be seen under several of WIU's single-season records, where last year he finished second all-time in touchdowns (25), third in completion percentage (.641), fifth in completions (220), seventh in passing yards (2,852), and ninth in yards per attempt (8.5).

A season ago, McShane was named Second Team All-MVFC as both a running back and return specialist. He recorded a team-high seven rushing touchdowns on 639 yards while also serving as an extra receiver. Through the air, he recorded an additional three touchdowns and his 307 receiving yards rank fifth all-time in a single-season by a running back.

In the preseason poll, Western was selected to finish the regular season in seventh place. North Dakota State was tabbed as the preseason favorite with 39 first place votes while South Dakota State and Northern Iowa rounded out the top three.

The Leathernecks joined the three and South Dakota as MVFC invites to the 2017 FCS Playoffs. The season saw Western ranked as high as No. 9 in the STATS FCS national poll before finishing the year No. 13.
