Leathernecks' Season Concludes With 9-3 Loss To Fort Wayne

WIU finished the season 17-31

FARGO, N.D. – The Western Illinois softball team fell in the first round of The Summit League tournament, 9-3, to the Fort Wayne Mastodons. The loss ends the Leathernecks' season at 17-31 and 9-7 in league play.

Fort Wayne scored first in the second inning with a leadoff home run to capture the first lead of the game. In the bottom of the frame, Sydney Hollings belted her fourth home run of the season to tie the game at one run apiece. In the third inning, Hailey Duwa brought home Jasmine Lara with a single to capture the Leathernecks' only lead of the game.

The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Fort Wayne scored four two-out runs to gain a 5-2 advantage. Lara picked up her second hut of the contest in the fifth inning and advanced to third because of two Fort Wayne wild pitches. Kelsey Marlow plated Lara with a hard hit ball to third base that bounced off of the fielder's glove.

The Mastodons put up four more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 9-3. Aly Compton picked up her second pinch hit in the past two games.

The 2018 season saw a series-sweep of South Dakota for the first time in program history. Additionally, Marlow set the program record for hits in a game with five against South Dakota.

The Leathernecks beat Iowa, 2-1, for their first win over a Power 5 school since 2015.
