Western Converts Eight Errors into Eight Runs in Win over Oral Roberts

The Leathernecks took advantage of several ORU miscues en route to an 8-2 win.

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois baseball team turned eight errors into eight runs Saturday afternoon and returned to the winning column with an 8-2 victory over Oral Roberts.

Scoring in all but three innings, the Leathernecks helped Ian Koch secure his first career success over the three-time reigning Summit League champions, and the team improved to 4-4 in league play.

Oral Roberts led 1-0 at the end of the first inning, and quickly saw itself trailing as Western posted four unanswered runs. Drue Galassi and Bailey Montgomery both reached on fielding errors and saw a pair of runs cross home plate before Alex Dorethy recorded the Leathernecks' first RBI of the day with a single to right field.

All three runs were tallied with two outs on the board as WIU led 3-1 by the end of the third inning.

The Golden Eagles cut their deficit in half, 4-2, in the top of the fifth, and the score was their last of the game. The visitors used two pitchers on the day, and all but one run was unearned.

Offensively, Dorethy went 2-for-5 at plate with a pair of RBIs while Johnathan Fleek went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Jordan Mikel was credited with the save after pitching 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball. During his time on the mound, ORU tabbed two hits and were fanned five times.

In 5.2 innings, Koch earned his second win of the year behind five hits, two runs (one earned), and seven strikeouts.

"The goal is to get wins," said Koch. "Today we had the run support. I give all the credit to the hitters. This was my first win against them so that was huge for me and the team. We can win [game two] and take the series."

Oral Roberts and Western expected to play two games Saturday, but saw the latter suspended in the middle of the eighth inning due to darkness. The Leathernecks were trailing, 4-1, and will resume play Sunday morning at 11 a.m. The remainder of game two will be followed by the series finale.
