Leathernecks Fall In First Round Summit League Championships

Denver tops WIU 4-0 in first match of League Championships

DENVER, Colo. – The Western Illinois women's tennis team dropped the opening round of the Summit League Championships to top-seeded Denver 4-0 on Friday (April 27).
 
The four-time reigning Summit League champions secured the double point right away. In the No. 3 doubles Ana Bjelica and Mary Bjelica fell 6-1. The Pioneers took the 1-0 advantage after Laura Ballesteros and Cary Milanes dropped the match 6-1 in the No. 2 doubles.
 
Denver kept the momentum going and won the next three single matches. Lubbers fell to the Summit Leage Player of the Year Bianca Monk 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles. After being named All-League, Bravo fell to No. 57 Julia O'Loughlin 6-0, 6-2. The Pioneers won the match-clinching victory when Milanes lost 6-1, 6-1 to Arisha Ladhani.
 
The Leathernecks concluded a successful season after qualifying for the Summit League Tournament for the first time in four years. Western finishes with at 10-8 record overall and having two All-League honorees.
