Western Drops Rubber Match at Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne clinched a series win over Western Sunday with a 6-1 score in the finale.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Fort Wayne's baseball team clinched a series win over Western Illinois Sunday with a 6-1 score in the finale. The rubber match was setup after the Mastodons captured a 3-1 decision in the opener and Western evened things with a 9-3 victory in game two.
 
The 'Dons held a 3-0 edge heading into the fifth inning where CJ Schaeffer ended the shutout with a RBI-sacrifice fly to center field.  
 
Fort Wayne struck in the second with an RBI-single before two fielding errors led to two runs in the next frame. Javin Drake received the start, and pitched a season-high six innings. His line score included eight hits, three runs (one earned), four strikeouts and two walks.
 
Extending its lead to 6-1, Fort Wayne put up three runs with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Mikel was charged with the scores, and J.T. Baksha escaped the inning with two fly outs and a ground out.  In five appearances this season, he has surrendered just one run and three hits.
 
Caleb Jacobs finished the day with a team-best two hits while Drue Galassi, Alex Dorethy and Johnathan Fleek each added one.
 
Western welcomes Bradley to Alfred D. Boyer Stadium Wednesday for the first of an eight-game home stand.
