Western Drops Series Opener at Evansville

The Leathernecks opened their three-game set with a 4-0 loss.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Western Illinois opened its weekend series at Evansville with a 4-0 loss at Braun Stadium Friday afternoon.

Both starters pitched into the seventh inning, with Ian Koch going the distance for a season-high 6.2 frames with five hits, three runs (two earned) and six strikeouts. To start the seventh, he retired two of the three batters he faced, and was relieved before a pair of RBI-doubles allowed two to cross home plate.

In the opening inning, a failed pickoff attempt put a Purple Ace in scoring position and an RBI-single up the middle allowed him to score. The home side went on to double its advantage, 2-0, in the fifth by scoring on a wild pitch.

Drue Galassi recorded the Leathernecks' first hit of the game with a single to center field and CJ Schaeffer led off the eighth with a single to left. The efforts marked the team's only hits on the day, and five Western runners were left on-base.

Jace Warkentien relieved Koch in the seventh inning, allowing two hits and one earned run, and Jack Carberry took over in the ninth with a clean sheet.

Western (0-7) returns to Braun Stadium Saturday for game two against Evansville. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
