Leathernecks Fall To Denver

Western Illinois to face South Dakota State in the first round of the Summit League Tournament

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois Leathernecks fell 89-52 on Senior Night on Saturday (Feb. 24) to the Denver Pioneers. Seniors Dalan Ancrum, Lynrick Moxey and Chris Snyder were honored before the game in a pregame ceremony.

"Give them (Denver) credit, they spaced the floor well. They moved, they passed, and they shoot it really well and anytime you relax, they make you pay," said head coach Billy Wright. "They are very patient with what they do."

Denver took advantage of a cold Western Illinois team to begin the game, as the Pioneers jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead. Isaac Johnson scored the first bucket for the Purple and Gold with 16:08 remaining in the first half. Denver extended their advantage to 18-6 at the 10:01 mark, but the Leathernecks answered, scoring the next six points.

Western Illinois cut the lead to 12 points with just under four and a half minutes in the first half, but the Pioneers closed the half on a 14-0 run to take a 44-18 advantage at the break.

With 14:37 to play in the second half, Brandon Gilbeck got the ball on the block, spun around a defender and dunked to ignite the crowd in Western Hall.

The Leathernecks answered back-to-back Denver buckets with an 8-5 run that was made up of free throws and a Webster hesitation layup.

Ancrum and Moxey each registered three points and three rebounds in their last game in Western Hall.

The Leathernecks head to Sioux Falls for a first round matchup against South Dakota State for the The Summit League Tournament at 6 p.m. on Saturday (March 3).
