MACOMB, Ill. —
Western Illinois dropped a 70-42 contest to the visiting South Dakota State Jackrabbits Saturday (Feb. 17) inside Western Hall.

The contest marked the regular-season home finale, along with Senior Day for Emily Clemens, Morgan Blumer, Olivia Braun, Taylor Hanneman, Michelle Farrow and Krishna Merriman.

"This day says a lot about these girls and how much they have done for our school, our department and our community. With what this team has done the last two years, you knew the emotion with Senior Day could work one way or the other," said head coach JD Gravina. "I have seen it go both ways a lot. I have seen teams step up and do something really difficult like winning, and I've seen where things don't go well. The emotion can work the other way and I think that is part of what happened tonight. Defensively, we did exactly what we wanted too.

"We forced them into 20-plus turnovers. We actually had more shot attempts than they had, which is just huge for us given the rebounding challenge that we already face. I thought, except for the three-minute span in the second quarter, we had a ton of good shots with what we wanted to do on offense."

Blumer led the way with 14 points, while Clemens finished with eight points and five assists. The Jackrabbits were led by Madison Guebert's 20 points, along with Macy Miller's 16. Myah Selland followed with 15 points.

The Leathernecks traded baskets with the Jackrabbits early, and trailed 18-14 after an Olivia Kaufmann layup. A 15-0 South Dakota State run midway through the second made it a 40-20 game at the half.

Western opened the third quarter with a 7-0 spurt to trail 41-27 after a pair of Kaufmann free throws and cut the SDSU lead to 14 at the 2:12 mark. The Jackrabbits, however were able to extend it to a 59-38 lead after three.

In the final quarter, South Dakota State outscored the Leathernecks 11-4 to close out with a 28-point win. Western Illinois now shifts its focus to the final regular season games, which consist of a pair on the road at North Dakota State (Feb. 22) and Denver (Feb. 24).
