Men's Basketball Drops Final Road Test Of The Year

Johnson leads team with 20 points and 12 rebounds

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Isaac Johnson was once again impressive Saturday (Feb. 17) in Western Illinois' 82-62 loss at South Dakota State. The freshman scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in Frost Arena on Military Appreciation Day for the Jackrabbits.

"For the most part, I thought our guys did a really nice job for most of the first half of making them get a good shot each and every time down the floor. We wanted to make sure we didn't get into a track meet with them. They're capable of putting up 95 or 100 points very quickly on you," said head coach Billy Wright. "We thought we had the tempo where we wanted it, but then a couple defensive miscues and turnovers that led to run-outs at the end of the first half really stretched it out."

The Leathernecks got off to a slow offensive start, as Western Illinois did not score until the 16:40 mark in the first half.

C.J. Duff got the scoring going for the Leathernecks as the sophomore netted the first seven of 11 points for the Leathernecks. South Dakota State's Mike Daum scored eleven straight points for the Jackrabbits, as they jumped out to a 17-11 lead.

With 11:01 to play in the half, Charles Gavin made a spin move on the block and scored, his first points since Jan. 25 at Denver. Bruster showed off his strength at the eight-minute mark as he drove and finished through contact for his first field goal of the contest.

After a made Jackrabbit basket, Kobe Webster displayed his quickness and took the ball the entire length of the floor and finished the drive with 4:25 remaining in the half. Webster later found Gavin on a no-look pass open underneath the basket with just 30 seconds remaining.

The Jackrabbits hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the first half to push the lead to 38-23 at the break.

Webster found Johnson for a 3-pointer on the wing to open the second half for the Leathernecks. Down 48-31, Dalan Ancrum stole a baseball pass from South Dakota State and found Delo Bruster for a baseline 3-pointer. Webster's two free throws completed a 5-0 Leatherneck run to pull the game to within 12 points at 48-36.

A Johnson fadeaway jumper ended a 5-0 Jackrabbit run with 12:57 to play. With 10:52 to go in the game, the Jackrabbits put together a 10-2 run to go up 69-44

Ancrum registered his first field goal of the contest at the 3:25 mark in the second half after he finished a drive down the lane with a dunk.

The Leathernecks are back on the court on Thursday (Feb. 22) against North Dakota State at 7 p.m. from Western Hall.
