Golden Goal Dooms Leathernecks at Eastern Illinois

The Panthers scored in the 106th minute to edge Western Illinois 1-0.

CHARLESTON, Ill. — The Western Illinois men's soccer team (2-7-3, 0-1-1) lost on a golden goal 1-0 in the 106th minute to Eastern Illinois (3-6-3, 1-0-1) on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Paul Kirdorf in the 21st minute and Daniel Kadima in the 26th minute both challenged the Eastern Illinois goalkeeper with shots that were hauled in. Trilk notched his only save of the first half off a corner in the 30th minute as the match was scoreless at halftime.

Both sides were relatively quiet in the second half and one of the best looks came on a shot from Luke Duball, but it was saved in the 87th minute to help send the game to overtime in a scoreless tie. The Leathernecks provided both shots on goal during the first overtime, Daniel Kadima in the 94th minute and Paul Kirdorf in the 97th minute, yet the Panther keeper corralled both attempts.

The Panthers broke through in the 106th minute on a shot from the top of the box by Christian Sosnowski that rebounded from a defender and into the back of the net for the golden goal. The Leathernecks fell 1-0 in their first Summit League loss of the season.

Western Illinois returns to the pitch at home against Omaha at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
