Mary Bjelica finishes fifth in the Singles B bracket

SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The Western Illinois women's tennis team closed out the fall campaign on the final day of the Missouri State Invitational on Sunday (Oct. 28).

"This Fall season has been a good and necessary experience for our young team highlighted with some remarkable individual runs by our girls," said head coach Mirko Bjelica.  "This weekend was another example of this with Megan (Tagaloa) winning a terrific singles match against the University of Missouri team member and Mary (Bjelica) placing fifth overall in her bracket among a quality competition. "

For the second day in a row, returner Mary Bjelica highlighted the final test of the fall. The sophomore was up 4-1 on Anna Alon of Missouri state, and then Alon retired advancing Bjelica to the fifth-place match. She took home fifth in the Singles B bracket on default by Aarushi Kakkar (Tennessee State).

Megan Tagaloa also shined in the third day of the invite. The freshman defeated Ally Noback of Mizzou 7-6 (5), 6-4 to earn her first victory of the tournament. Tagaloa finished ninth in the Singles C bracket after a default victory of Qili Ma (Central Arkansas).

Mia Melnizki and Anouk Maajong finished tenth and eleventh in the Singles A bracket. Returner Ana Bjelica rounded out the Leathernecks placing fourteenth.

The Leathernecks end the fall season with all five newcomers earning a win. Western will now ready for the spring schedule and look to advance to the Summit League Tournament for the second straight year.
