Leathernecks End Season in Close Loss at Omaha

Jenna Lundgren scored her second goal of the season in a 2-1 defeat.

OMAHA, Neb. — The Western Illinois women's soccer team (3-14-1, 0-8-0) closed out the 2018 season with a 2-1 loss at Omaha (7-10-2, 4-3-1) on Sunday, Oct. 28.

"We really hurt ourselves allowing a goal right at the end of the first half," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "We scored to tie after putting a lot of pressure on them to start the second half. Hats off to Omaha though as they came right back to take the lead. The quality of our play has improved and we are a competitive team. The next step is the most difficult, playing well and getting a result. Thanks to our senior leadership this year, we wish them all the best."

The Leathernecks came out firing with a shot on goal by Lilly Butler in the fourth minute from up close near the right wing. Emily Bollman rifled a shot from the far-right wing in the seventh minute that was also corralled by the Omaha goalkeeper. In the final seconds of the first half, Kiana Dualan headed in a cross into the back of the net as the Mavericks took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Western Illinois evened the score in the 57th minute when a header attempt by Natalie Sielaff deflected to Jenna Lundgren for a shot that hit the back of the net from the top of the box. After the equalizer, Omaha answered four minutes later when Kiana Dualan tapped the ball into the back of the net after it bounced off Ines Palmiero Herrera. The last chance for the Leathernecks came in the 86th minute on a shot in the box by Sielaff, but it sailed high as the Mavericks escaped with a 2-1 victory.

The 2018 campaign has concluded for Western Illinois women's soccer.
