Gilbeck Breaks Program Blocked Shots Record In Loss To Oral Roberts

Gilbeck records five blocks in the contest and is now the program leader with 150 blocked shots

TULSA, Okla. - On a night in which junior Brandon Gilbeck recorded his 150th career block, a program record, the Western Illinois Leathernecks fell 81-66 to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Saturday (Jan. 6).

"They did a good job of attacking on the offensive glass, give them credit," said head coach Billy Wright. "I thought we did a good job of making them miss the first shot, we just had trouble blocking out. We tried to make an adjustment and go with a traditional lineup, and we had more success with that in the second half. But for the most part, that and the turnovers is what led to the loss."

Dalan Ancrum started hot for WIU, knocking down two 3-pointers within the first three and a half minutes of the game.

Charles Gavin halted a 6-0 Golden Eagle run midway through the first half when he made a move on the block and scored, pulling the Leathernecks to within one point at 14-13.  Ancrum knocked down the next two buckets for the Leathernecks, putting them ahead 18-17 with 12:22 to go in the first half.

Gavin finished after another offensive rebound with 8:21 to go in the half to tie the contest at 24. He finished with a career-high eight points in the game. Oral Roberts then went on a 8-0 run to go up 34-26 that was stopped by a C.J. Duff jumper in the lane.

As time expired in the first half, Kobe Webster hoisted up a three-quarter court shot that came up short, but Ancrum was there for the lay-in to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 10 at 45-35.

Nine seconds into the second half, Gilbeck blocked his fifth shot of the night and 150th of his career. Webster stopped a 6-2 Golden Eagle run after Delo Bruster found him for a 3-pointer from the wing.

Down 79-63 with 2:06 remaining in the contest, Webster knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to shorten the Oral Roberts' lead to 15.

The Leathernecks return home for four-straight contests beginning with a conference tilt against Omaha on Jan.11 at 7 p.m.
