Men's Basketball Falls In League Opener Against South Dakota

Leathernecks outlasted 62-50 in Vermillion

VERMILLION, S.D. - Despite stymying the Coyotes' offense by holding them to only 33 percent, the Western Illinois Leathernecks fell in their Summit League opener 62-50 against South Dakota.

"(In the second half) We did a much better job of staying in front of the ball and getting a much better rotation," said head coach Billy Wright. "When the shot went up, we got the first rebound and that was a big part of our comeback attempt."

Western Illinois started off the game hot from behind the arc as Kobe Webster and C.J. Duff each hit 3-pointers from within the first minute and a half of the contest. However, WIU finished the game 4-24 from beyond the arc.

With WIU up 6-0, the Coyotes went on an 8-0 run that was halted by a Brandon Gilbeck jumper in the lane to tie the score. Down by eight points with 10:03 to go in the first half, the Leathernecks went scored nine of the next 13 points in the game that was highlighted by a Dalan Ancrum 3-pointer.

Ancrum finished the game with his second double-double of the season (12 points and 10 rebounds), while Webster led all scorers with 19 points.

South Dakota was able to muster a 9-0 run against a stingy Leatherneck defense that put the Coyotes up 13 points with 2:10 in the first half. Delo Bruster found Kobe Webster for a deep trifecta that ended the Coyote run.

Down 10 points at the half, WIU began the second half on a 9-4 run with Ancrum putting through five of the nine points.

After Ancrum found Gilbeck for an easy dunk that cut the lead to four points, both teams played back-and-forth for the next four minutes with the lead never getting more than six.

Gilbeck then got free in the paint, scored and shortened the lead to four again with 2:31 to go. However, the Coyotes scored the next 10 points to outlast the Leathernecks and win.

WIU continues its road trip in Tulsa, Oklahoma against Oral Roberts on Saturday (Jan. 6) at 7 p.m. from the Mabee Center.
