Western Wins Third Straight In 91-44 Victory Over Fort Wayne

The Leathernecks had six in double figures.

MACOMB, Ill.— Western Illinois gained its third straight win and improved to 4-1 in league play off a 91-44 victory over the visiting Fort Wayne Mastodons.
 
For the second time this season, Western Illinois recorded six players with double figures as Emily Clemens (13), Taylor Higginbotham (13), Michelle Farrow (11), Morgan Blumer (11), Sam Pryor (11) and Olivia Kaufmann (10).
 
The last time Western Illinois had six in double figures was in the Nov. 10 season opening win over Kansas City.
 
After the 9 first quarter points from Clemens, the Leathernecks maintained a 20-12 lead. After Western Illinois opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run which was sparked by a Taylor Higginbotham 3-pointer, the Leathernecks held a 42-17 lead at the half. Over the final 7:33 of the half, the Leathernecks outscored Fort Wayne 16-3.
 
In the third, Morgan Blumer knocked down back-to-back threes off dishes from Olivia Braun to force a Fort Wayne timeout at the 3:35 mark, as the Leatherneck lead grew to 59-26. The Purple and Gold kept a 65-28 cushion after three quarters of play.
 
After a long three-pointer from Grace Gilmore with 3:10 to go, Western was eventually able to close out the final minutes and notch its fourth Summit League win.
 
Western Illinois (14-5, 4-1) hits the road for a Jan. 20 meeting with South Dakota State. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. (CST) in Brookings, S.D.
 
PROGRAM NOTES:
-Western Illinois sweeps the regular season series over Fort Wayne and ties the series at 12-12…
-Six turnovers ties for the sixth-fewest in a single game… This was also the seventh time ever that Western committed six or fewer turnovers…
-It also marked the second straight game that the team recorded 90 or more points (91 at Omaha, Jan. 13)…

-Emily Clemens recorded her 61st career double-digit scoring game and her 56th-career game of five or more assists…
-Taylor Higginbotham's 13 points marked her 62nd double-digit scoring game...
