MACOMB, Ill.— Western Illinois men's soccer plays its first home match of the season at John MacKenzie Alumni Field for a 4 p.m. scheduled matchup against Drake on Sept. 20.

LAST TIME OUT:
A pair of goals by Fernando Pacheco gave Western Illinois (2-4-0) the spark it needed to hand Kansas City its first defeat of the season with a 3-2 result on Saturday (Sept. 16). The Leathernecks fell into an early hole after a UMKC goal in the 16th minute, but they were able to respond when Pacheco netted his fourth goal of the season (23') off a cross from his brother Alejandro Pacheco for the assist.

Pacheco's equalizer notched the score at 1-1 after the first half. Western was able to take the lead in the 61st minute off the foot of Drew Whalen when he found the back of the net off an assist by Paul Kirdorf. Following a red card by UMKC, the Leathernecks were able to take a 3-1 cushion off a penalty kick goal by Pacheco, his second of the match.

The Kangaroos were able to net a goal in the 89th minute, but the Leathernecks were able to come away with the road win. Along with his two goals, Pacheco finished with three shots on goal, while Paul Kirdorf had a match-high four shots and one assist on Whalen's goal. Ben Fiddes also totaled three shots on goal for the match. In net, Tim Trilk finished with a career-high eight saves. In total, the Purple and Gold recorded 17 shots to UMKC's 15.

Pacheco Garners 'Offensive Player of the Week' Honor:
With a pair of goals in the win over Kansas City (Sept. 16), Western Illinois junior forward Fernando Pacheco earned his first-career Summit League 'Offensive Player of the Week' honor.

Pacheco, a two-time Summit League All-Academic Team and a Second Team All-Summit League honoree last season, helped the Leathernecks rally back from being down 1-0 on the road at UMKC to take the match 3-2 and hand the Kangaroos their first loss of the season. This marked the second time Pacheco notched two goals on the season, with the last time being Sept. 3 against Mount Mercy.

The junior forward also ranks tied for second in The Summit League with five goals this season. He is currently third in the league with a team-high 10 points (all goals) and 10 shots on goal.

SCOUTING DRAKE:
The Bulldogs currently sit at 1-6-0 overall, most recently falling 3-2 at home against Valparaiso Sept. 16. In the last meeting between Western and Drake, the Leathernecks won 2-1 on the road off goals from the feet of Daniel Collins and Alejandro Pacheco. In the match, both Collins (two shots on goal) and Pacheco (one shot on goal) led the team in scoring, followed by Jacob Bevan with an assist.

In the all-time series, the Leathernecks are 8-17-2 overall against the Bulldogs.

LOOKING AHEAD:
This Saturday (Sept. 23) the Leathernecks travel on the road to Fort Wayne for their Summit League opener. Both teams will take the pitch for a 7 p.m. scheduled first touch.
