Iowa Edges WIU Softball 3-1 in Iowa City Tuesday

The Hawkeyes scores all three of their runs in the first and were held scoreless the remainder of the game

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa's three-run first inning was enough to top Western Illinois softball in Iowa City Tuesday night (April 25) as the Hawkeyes came away with a 3-1 victory. The Leathernecks fell to 19-27 overall after the loss, while Iowa improved to a 16-27 record on the year.

The Hawkeyes put its first two runners on first and second in the bottom of the first before Devin Cantu ripped a single that bounced into left field and off of the glove of Aly Compton that allowed two runs to score. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead with no outs, Iowa's Angela Schmiederer poked a single to right center sending Cantu in to score to give the Hawkeyes the early 3-0 lead.

In the circle for Iowa, Shayla Starkenburg set down the first 12 Leathernecks in order. Senior Holly Hoelting broke up the perfect game in the top of the fifth with a leadoff single to center. Hailey Duwa then pulled a single down the first base line before a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position. With one out, starting pitcher Emily Ira lifted a fly ball to dead center field which was enough to score Hoelting and put the Leathernecks on the board and make it a 3-1 game.

Following the first inning, Ira settled in and only allowed two more hits and finished the game with four strikeouts.

The Leathernecks could not get any other momentum as Iowa's Starkenburg went the distance for a complete game, only allowing 2 hits and striking out three Leathernecks.

Hoelting and Duwa collected Western's two hits, and Ira drove in WIU's lone run. Cantu had 2 RBIs for Iowa while Cheyenne Pratt and Schmiederer picked up two hits each.

The Leathernecks are scheduled to be back in action on Saturday (April 29) at Iowa State for a doubleheader slated to start at noon.
