Western Out-Hits Iowa in Loss

The Leathernecks out-hit Iowa 10-7, led by Deion Thompson’s three hits

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Western Illinois out-hit Iowa on the night, led by Deion Thompson's career-high three hits, but the Leathernecks dropped a 4-1 decision at Duane Banks Field.

Thompson lined a two-out triple in the second inning, his second career triple in as many games. Justin Fitzpatrick walked but Western was kept off the scoreboard.

Iowa (20-11 overall) plated a run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning, then used a RBI single and sacrifice fly in the fourth to go ahead 3-0.

Thompson lined a leadoff single in the fifth, took second on a wild pitch, third on a groundout and scored on Roman Visintine's RBI single making it 3-1.

Western had base runners in the third, fourth and sixth as well, but Iowa was able to get a caught stealing in the third then twice got an inning-ending double play.

Thompson set his career-high with his third hit off a single, then Fitzpatrick singled to start the seventh, putting runners on the corners. However, a pickoff and consecutive strikeouts got the Hawkeyes out of the jam.

With his walk in the ninth, Thompson reached base in all four plate appearances. Visintine added two hits, and the 1-4 hitters in WIU's lineup each had a hit in the 10-7 advantage.

"Our guys are starting to figure it out offensively. Deion has had a great week, he made a mental adjustment. Roman is starting to come back… he's the last piece of the puzzle to get going. He made a nice adjustment on his swing yesterday to kind of get back to where he was last year," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "We were much better tonight than last Tuesday, our first midweek road game and we weren't sharp (that night). I felt like today we were sharp but we did practice yesterday. Baseball is a tough sport to compete if you have the day off the day before. We were much better defensively, our at-bats were more competitive tonight."

Jimmy Perkins (2-2) was charged for three runs on five hits in four innings. Ian Koch, Matthew Sturchio and Nate Westfahl all recorded a scoreless inning of relief.

"Last weekend we did a really good job of driving guys in when we had opportunities. We are a lot more competitive at the plate right now than we were in the beginning of the year," said Brownlee. "And our pitching has been really good… we've got a lot of different looks out of the bullpen so we can mix and match more. That's why we've been able to keep the score down in most of our games lately."

Matt Hoeg drove in two runs to lead Iowa. Drake Robison (2-2) earned the win in relief, throwing three shutout innings. Shane Ritter pitched the ninth for his third save.

Western (9-21) returns home this weekend, playing host to South Dakota State. The three-game Summit League series opens on Friday at 3 p.m.
