Tennis Splits Doubleheader against SEMO and Quincy

Leathernecks are back in action tomorrow at Northern Illinois

QUINCY, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's tennis team split a doubleheader with Quincy and Southeast Missouri State on Saturday, Feb. 4. The Leathernecks topped Quincy 4-1 before falling to SEMO 5-2 to move to 4-3 on the young season.

MATCH ONE: Western Illinois 4, Quincy 1

The Leathernecks got off to solid start in doubles play as Courtney Lubbers and Natalia Bravo defeated Amy Kuhle and Sydney Lynch 6-4 at the No. 1 position. Maria Bessmertnaya and Nicole Jones also won 6-4 at the No. 2 position.

Western picked up victories in all four singles positions, beginning with Lubbers at No. 1: 6-3, 2-6, 10-5. Bravo (6-1, 6-0), Daniel Fuentes (6-0, 6-0) and Laura Ballesteros (6-3, 6-1) all beat their opponents handedly.

MATCH TWO: Southeast Missouri State 5, Western Illinois 2

After the Leathernecks were unable to pick up any wins in doubles play, they turned their focus to singles play, where they picked up two points.

Lubbers topped her opponent in No. 1 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Daniel Fuentes also picked up a win in No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-2.

Bravo (6-0, 6-3), Bessmertnaya (7-5), Ballesteros (6-1, 6-2) and Milanes (6-2, 6-2) all fell at the No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 positions, respectively.

The Purple and Gold return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Northern Illinois in a road matchup. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
