Leathernecks Fall in Extras to Louisiana-Monroe Sunday

Western Illinois falls 1-0 in eight innings

CONWAY, Ark. – The Western Illinois softball team closed out play at the Central Arkansas Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 26 with an extra-inning loss to Louisiana-Monroe. With the decision, Western falls to 4-9 on the young season.

It was a pitcher's dual during the final game of the UCA Invitational. The Leathernecks held the Warhawks to just three hits, but were limited to two through the first seven innings. Starting WIU pitcher Emily Ira struck out six batters and walked none, while ULM's Melanie Coyne struck out nine and walked one.

Rachel Beatty was the first Leatherneck on base in the top of the first as she hit a leadoff single through the right side. However, she was picked off at second base to end the inning.

Holly Hoelting walked in the top of the second and hit a single in the top of the fourth but she was left stranded both times.

The sixth inning saw both teams get retired in order. In the bottom of the seventh, ULM threatened with a single but she was left stranded as the game went into extra innings tied up at 0-0.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Warhawks connected on a triple and Coyne hit the game-winning RBI to take down Western 1-0.

Ira finished the game with eight strikeouts, no walks and one earned run over seven and a third innings.

The Purple and Gold now turn their attention to the Coach B Classic, hosted by Southern Illinois in Carbondale from March 3-4.
