Softball Tops Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Leathernecks earn a 9-6 victory Saturday afternoon

CONWAY, Ark. – The Western Illinois softball team won their second straight game in the Central Arkansas Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 25, topping Arkansas-Pine Bluff by a score of 9-6. With the victory, the Leathernecks move to 4-8 on the season.

In the top of the first, the UAPB took a 3-0 lead following a pair of Leatherneck errors.

Western Illinois wasted no time responding as Nina Maggio singled to center field, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. Kelsey Marlow and Holly Hoelting then drew back-to-back walks. Aly Compton reached on a fielder's choice that scored Maggio from third and put the Leathernecks on the board.

The Leathernecks continued to work their way around the base paths as both Compton and Hoelting advanced a base on a wild pitch and Meghan Henson and Brooke Stulga walked. After Stulga's walk scored Hoelting, Jasmine Lara hit a two-RBI single that scored Compton and Henson. At the end of one inning of play, WIU led 4-3.

Western kept it rolling into the bottom of the second when Rachel Beatty drew a walk and stole second. Marlow then brought Beatty home with a double to right center. Hoelting and Marlow traded places after Hoelting's double to center field, giving Western a 6-3 lead at the end of the second inning.

The Golden Lions quickly responded in the top of the third with a two-run home run to center field, cutting UAPB's deficit to one run, 6-5.

Lara hit her second base hit of the day to lead off the bottom of the third. After advancing to third following walks from Knepper and Marlow, Lara crossed home plate after Hoelting drew Western's eighth walk of the day, extending Western's lead to 7-5.

In the bottom of the sixth, Hoelting drew her third walk of the game to bring on Amanda Manton to pinch run. After Compton singled down the right field line and advanced to second, Henson brought Manton home with a single through the left side.

Compton crossed home plate following an RBI single from Stulga to put Western by a score of 9-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, UAPB threatened with an RBI-double to left center to come within three runs, but it wasn't enough as Western took the contest 9-6.

Maggio, Henson, Stulga and Lara each garnered two hits in the victory, while Hoelting, Henson, Stulga and Lara each raked in two RBIs a piece. Hoelting also drew three of the team's nine walks.

In the circle, Stulga got the victory after throwing seven innings with six strikeouts.

The Leathernecks close out the Central Arkansas Invitational Sunday morning (Feb. 26) with a 9 a.m. matchup against Louisiana-Monroe.
