Tennis Splits Doubleheader in Macomb

Leathernecks fall to SIU-E, top Illinois Springfield

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's tennis team took to the outdoor courts in Macomb on Sunday (Feb. 19) where they played host to SIU-E and Illinois-Springfield for a doubleheader. After falling to the Cougars 5-2, the Leathernecks bounced back and swept the Prairie Stars 7-0. With the decisions, Western moves to 6-7 on the year.

MATCH ONE: SIU-E 5, Western Illinois 2

Although Anna Daniel Fuentes and Cary Milanes were able to pick up a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, the Cougars claimed the points with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions.

In singles play, Natalia Bravo fell in the first set 7-5, but bounced back to take the second set 7-6 and the tiebreaker 10-5 to claim the victory.

Laura Ballesteros also picked up a victory in singles play. She won the first set 6-1 before falling in the second 4-6. The freshman was able to take the tiebreaker 10-8.

Courtney Lubbers (6-3, 6-3), Maria Bessermertnaya (6-3, 6-1), Daniel Fuentes (6-2, 5-7, 10-8), and Milanes (6-3, 6-0) were unable to secure victories in their respective positions.

MATCH TWO: Western Illinois 7, Illinois Springfield 0

The Leathernecks cruised and picked up the doubles point thanks to wins by Lubbers and Wallace (6-4), Ballesteros and Jones (6-2) and Milanes and Daniel Fuentes (6-2).

The success continued into singles play where Lubbers picked up a 3-6, 6-1, 12-6 victory at the No. 1 spot. Bravo won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2, while Daniel Fuentes beat her opponent 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.

In No. 4 singles, Ballesteros won 6-3, 6-1. Wallace (6-4, 6-3) and Milanes (6-2, 6-1) also picked up wins.

The Purple and Gold will now turn their sights toward Iowa, who they play in Iowa City on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.
