Western Illinois Drops Road Game At Bradley

Emily Clemens led the way with 21 points and nine assists.

PEORIA, Ill.— Western Illinois dropped its fourth game of the season at Bradley (Dec. 28), despite five players reaching double figures in scoring.

"Unfortunately, this game followed a familiar script," said head coach JD Gravina. "We played great early and got up big, but when we started to cool off, we had a big let-down. Bradley was able to get momentum and never let us regain it. Credit to them for moving the ball really well against our zone, scoring inside and knocking down 3-point shots."

Led by the 21 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals from Emily Clemens, the Leathernecks also saw Olivia Braun (10 points, 10 rebounds) collect her second-career double-double. Taylor Higginbotham also recorded 15 points, followed by Sam Pryor (12) and Morgan Blumer (11).

Bradley was led by a pair of double-doubles from Gabi Haack (26 points, 10 rebounds), who also connected on eight threes, along with Chelsea Brackmann's 20 points and 12 boards.

The Leathernecks came out hot in the first quarter, and built a 31-16 lead over the Braves through 10 minutes, which included a 17-5 run over a 3:29 span.

The lead increased to 18 after back-to-back threes from Sam Pryor in the opening minute of the second. Bradley, however, was able to cut the Purple and Gold's lead to single digits and trail by eight at the half (42-34).

With 7:41 to go in the third, the Braves knocked down a pair from beyond the arc to cut the Leatherneck lead to one. Western eventually fell into a 1-point deficit with 4:38 to go in the third.

The Leathernecks were able to retake the lead following a finger-roll layup by Clemens and a pair from the charity stripe by Taylor Higginbotham, but after another run that was capped off by a three from the Braves, Western found itself in a 61-55 hole with 1:21 to go in the third.

Down by eight entering the fourth, Western tried to erase the 63-55 deficit, but could not muster a comeback, as the Braves kept the game at two possessions. A fast-break three by Clemens cut the Bradley lead at 84-80, but another three by Haack closed out the game at 87-80.

Western Illinois now shifts its focus to its Summit League opener, as they play host to Fort Wayne for a 1 p.m. (CST) tip on Dec. 30 to close out the five-game road slate.
