MACOMB, Ill.—
The Western Illinois women's basketball program takes on Stanford (Dec. 18) and Gonzaga (Dec. 21) in a pair first-ever meetings for a two-game west coast swing.
 
LEADING THE LEAGUE:
Through the week of Dec. 13 per The Summit League Weekly Release, Western Illinois women's basketball leads the league in eight different categories as a team, and seven different categories individually.
 
CLEMENS CLIMBING THE RECORDS:
Senior point guard Emily Clemens only needs two more assists to be the all-time career leader in program history. She is one assists behind Jolene Hanig (1988-91), who recorded 542 for her career. Clemens is currently second in the nation with 94 assists thus far this season. She is also the all-time record holder in program history for the most free throws made with 447 so far. She is also the only Leatherneck to have over 1,000 points, 500 assists and 200 steals.
 
SCOUTING STANFORD:
The No. 18 nationally-ranked Cardinal sit at 6-4 overall this season after coming off a 74-33 win over UNLV (Dec. 16). Stanford has three players that average double-digit scoring in Brittany McPhee (16.5), Alanna Smith (14.7) and DiJonai Carrington (11.7). Tara VanDerveer is in her 32nd season at the helm of the program, with an 866-184 overall record. For her career, she has 1,018 wins as she is in her 39th season. This will be the first-ever meeting between Stanford and Western Illinois.
 
The Cardinal are coming off a 2016-17 season that saw a Final Four appearance, and the program has two NCAA National Championships in 1990 and 1992. Overall, the team has 13 Final Four appearances and 31 NCAA Tournament berths.
 
SCOUTING GONZAGA:
The Bulldogs are currently No. 20 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll, and are 5-4 overall so far this season. Prior to the Dec. 21 matchup against the Leathernecks, Gonzaga takes on Saint Francis (Pa.) on Dec. 17 at home. Jill Barta leads the Bulldogs with 20.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest, followed by Zykera Rice (12.6) and Chandler Smith (11.8). At the helm of the program is Lisa Fortier, who is in her fourth season as head coach. This will also be the first-ever meeting between the programs.
 
HISTORY VERSUS CALIFORNIA/WASHINGTON OPPONENTS:
The Leathernecks are 2-6 against teams from the state of California. Western Illinois will also play for the first time in program history in the state of Washington, however, Gonzaga will be the second team from that state that the Leathernecks have played. Western Illinois defeated Eastern Washington twice at neutral locations in 1993 and 2005.
