Leathernecks Put Together Record-Setting Performance Against Calvary

Western gives up fewest points in a half in program history

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois Leathernecks men's basketball team (3-0) eclipsed 100 points for the second time this season in a record-breaking performance on Saturday (Nov. 18) against Calvary, 102-25.  The 77-point victory was the largest in program history, breaking the 62-point win against Eastern Michigan in 1959.

"We definitely wanted to make sure that we had a balanced attack, and get the ball inside with paint touches. And obviously we wanted to take away their threes. They're a really good three-point shooting team," said head coach Billy Wright. "Jalen Morgan continues to come in and give us a lift. We talk about it's not who you play, it's how you play. Lynrick Moxey got into the mix a little earlier. I think he's doing a tremendous job in practice to earn those minutes. It's another collective team effort, and I'm really pleased with the outcome."

The Leathernecks started the game on a 16-0 run that included four layups by Brandon Gilbeck and six points from Dalan Ancrum. Gilbeck recorded his second 20-point game and fourth career double-double.

Up 20-6, Western went on a 35-0 run that spanned from the 13:57 mark in the first half to 43 seconds before halftime. Over that time period, Morgan registered nine points, while Isaac Johnson logged six. Charles Gavin put down his first five points as a Leatherneck during the span as well. WIU forced eight turnovers and four steals during the 13-minute stretch. The Leatherneck defense only gave up three first-half field goals.

Calvary's eight points at the half was the fewest amount of points Western's basketball program has ever given up. The second half was not much different, as the Leathernecks outscored the Warriors 49-17.

Lynrick Moxey led Western in points in the second half with 11, followed by Gilbeck (8) and Kobe Webster (7). WIU went on a 25-0 in the second half, highlighted by three steals and 11-14 shooting from the field. Western ended the half on a 12-6 run.

The Leathernecks get back on the floor for their first road test on Wednesday (Nov. 22) against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Tip is slated for 7 p.m.
