Western Falls In Season Finale At Omaha

Madeline Edwards led the way with her 45th minute goal.

OMAHA, Neb. — Western Illinois concluded the 2017 season with a 3-1 loss on the road at Omaha Thursday (Oct. 26).

The Leathernecks were on the attack early as Bianca Romay's shot hit the crossbar in the 21st minute. Romay followed with a shot in the 25th minute, while Lauryn Peters and Natlalie Nagle had scoring opportunities in the 27th and 33rd minutes.

The Mavericks were able to get on the board first with a long ball over the top of the defense that was finished high into the net (37')

With ten seconds to go until the half, Madeline Edwards was there for the equalizer goal after she lobbed the ball over the opposing keeper to tie it at 1-1.

The Leathernecks eventually fell behind 2-1 in the 61st minute off a long shot that flew into the corner of the net. After trying to gain another tying goal, the Mavericks were able to build a 3-1 lead and seal the game after the final goal with 40 seconds to play in the match.

Edwards led the way with her goal off three shots (one on goal), followed by Romay's four shots and one assist. In net, Ines Palmiero Herrera totaled six saves for the match.

"We played very well tonight in tough and windy conditions," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We hit the crossbar twice in the first half and if we get one of them to go in, it would have changed the game. We will miss our seniors and their leadership. We thank them for their contributions to the program."
