Women's Basketball Drops Saturday Road Contest At South Dakota State

The Leathernecks fell 73-58 in Brookings, S.D.

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Fighting Leatherneck women's basketball team fell to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 73-58 on the road Saturday (Jan. 21).

"I liked the way we played hard and stuck with them on the boards. As bad as we shot it and played offensively, the game really could have gotten away from us," said head coach JD Gravina. "We have to move more and at a more urgent purpose on offense."

Western Illinois fell behind 20-5 after a 16-0 Jackrabbit first-quarter run, but managed to outscore South Dakota State 18-13 in the second. A fast-break score by Taylor Higginbotham, followed by a Jasmine Patrick putback with 3:17 to go in the second quarter made it a 7-point game.

The Jackrabbits went back up double-digits, but Emily Clemens managed to bank in a runner as time expired in the half, making it a 35-26 game at halftime.

The Leathernecks dwindled SDSU's lead to six points after Morgan Blumer split a pair of free throws, but the Jackrabbits hit back-to-back treys from beyond the arc to make it a 43-31 game with 4:41 to go in the third quarter. The Jackrabbit lead was 13 entering the fourth.

South Dakota State jumped out to a 62-47 advantage with 4:50 to go in the game. Clemens picked up her 337th career assist to move to seventh all-time in program history after she dished the ball to Olivia Braun, who knocked down a quick jumper late in the fourth quarter.

Clemens led the way with 15 points and four assists. Morgan Blumer followed with 12 points and four rebounds. Mallory Boyle recorded a game-high 11 rebounds, while Olivia Braun had seven blocks.

The Jackrabbits had three in double-digit scoring with Kerri Young and Madison Guebert both recording 18 points each. Ellie Thompson followed with 16 points, while Clarissa Ober recorded 10 boards.

"This part of our schedule is going to be incredibly challenging, so the focus will be on learning from this game and moving forward to the next," said Gravina.

The Leathernecks (15-5, 5-2) return home to play host to IUPUI next Wednesday (Jan. 25) as part of Military Appreciation Day. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT).
