Leathernecks Fall In Tough Match At SMU

Western drops 2-1 contest to SMU.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Leatherneck men's soccer team fell 2-1 on the road to Southern Methodist University Friday, Sept. 2. Western was led by the 36th minute goal of Daniel Collins.

"After a slow start we fought our way back into the match. We were much more organized in the second half and were unfortunate not to tie it up," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "Hats off to SMU for their effort and shutting us out in the second half."

The Mustangs got on the board first with an early goal in the second minute by Garrett McLaughlin off a header. Western saw multiple opportunities against SMU's defense, with Fernando Pacheco recording a shot in the 15th minute, and Jacob Bevan getting a header just 20 seconds later, but both attempts were saved.

It was at the 36th minute mark when Collins scored the equalizer for his first goal of the season. Armel Kouassi found Jacob Bevan, who was able to connect with Collins, as he found the back of the net.

Six minutes later, the Mustangs regained the lead when Mauro Cichero scored at the 42nd minute mark, just before the half. Neither team could find a goal in the second half, as SMU was able to hang on for the 2-1 win.

The Leathernecks (0-2-1), finished with six shots compared to the Mustang's nine, but recorded more saves (3-2) in the match. SMU won the corner kick battle 4-2.

Tim Trilk was once again the starter in goal, recording three saves in the full 90 minutes. He now has 11 saves for the season. Fernando Pacheco, Bevan, Collins and Antonio Aguilar all recorded one shot, while Kouassi led the team with two.

Up next for the Leathernecks is their second road match in three days, which is also their fourth straight. Western will take on Valparaiso on the road Sunday, Sept. 4, at 3:30 p.m. That match will air live on ESPN3. The first home match follows on Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. against Bowling Green.
