Leathernecks Play Host To Milwaukee, Travel To Western Michigan

The women's soccer team faces Milwaukee at home, followed by a trip to Western Michigan.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer team opens its home schedule Friday (Sept. 2) when Milwaukee (2-1-1) comes to Macomb after playing their first three matches away from Macomb. Western Illinois sits at 1-2-0 overall, with their first win of the season coming at Chicago State on Aug. 21 (3-1). Two days later, WIU travels to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on Western Michigan Sunday, Sept. 4 at noon.

SCOUNTING THE OPPONENTS:

Milwaukee is currently sits at 2-1-1 overall. The Panthers have victories over Northern Illinois (3-1) and Akron (1-0). The Panthers also tied Wisconsin 1-1 on the road, and lost 1-0 at home to Southeast Missouri in their most recent match. They are coached by Troy Fabiano, who is in his second season with the Panthers. Callie O'Donnell currently leads the team with six points overall and three goals this year. Their roster consists of 11 freshmen, seven sophomores, 10 juniors and six seniors.

Western Michigan sits at 2-1 overall, falling at Notre Dame in their previous match (3-0). Western Michigan's two wins come against fellow Summit League member Fort Wayne (2-1) and at Indiana (2-0). The Broncos will face Oakland Friday, Sept. 2, prior to their Sept. 4 match against the Leathernecks. Western Michigan is led by head coach Lauren Sinacola, who is in her first season at the helm of the program. Junior midfielder Kendall Juhnke leads the Broncos with four points with two goals this season.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

Friday will mark the fifth meeting between Milwaukee and Western Illinois. The Leathernecks trail the all-time series 1-3-0. In three out of the four matches, Western traveled on the road. Western is 0-3 on the road against the Panthers, while the lone win in the series was at home on Sept. 16, 2010 (1-0). The last meeting between the two teams took place on Aug. 21, 2015, when the Leathernecks fell 1-0 on the road.

Against Western Michigan, the Leathernecks will look for their first win in program history over the Broncos in the third meeting between the two teams. Western trails the all-time series 0-2-0, falling in the last meeting 0-2 at home Sept. 6, 2015.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Following this weekend's matches, the Leathernecks return to John MacKenzie Alumni Field Friday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. against North Dakota. Western opens Summit League play at home against Denver Sept. 30 at 3 p.m.
