Leathernecks Travel To Northern Illinois

The women's soccer team takes on NIU on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 2 p.m.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Fighting Leathernecks women's soccer team hits the road this weekend to face Northern Illinois for its third regular season match on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m.

A LOOK AT YOUR LEATHERNECKS:  Western Illinois is coming off a 3-1 win over Chicago State, led by goals from Bianca Romay, Mary Street and Ashley Kuhlmann. Street currently leads the team with three points after her goal and assist against Chicago State. The Leathernecks sit at 1-1 overall, and Northern Illinois will be their third straight road match before the home opener on Sept. 2 against Milwaukee.

Going into the match, Romay leads the team in shots on goal with four, while Alexandra Siavelis has six recorded shots, the most for the Leathernecks two games into the season. Romay, Street and Maddie Wisely have played 180 minutes, the most on the team so far.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: NIU currently sits at 0-1-1 overall, tying its first match against UIC (0-0) on Aug. 19 at home. The Huskies are coming off a 3-1 loss at Milwaukee on Aug. 21. The Leathernecks will face Milwaukee Sept. 2 for the teams' regular season home opener. NIU is coached by John Ross, who is in his fifth year with the Huskies. Northern Illinois' roster consists of eight freshmen, six sophomores, seven juniors and four seniors.

SERIES HISTORY: This will be the seventh meeting between Western Illinois and Northern Illinois. The Leathernecks lead the all-time series 2-1-3. In the last four meetings, Western has two wins and two ties. In their last meeting, the Purple and Gold came away with a 2-0 win at John MacKenzie Alumni Field Aug. 25, 2014.

WIU will look for its first road win against the Huskies (NIU's only win in all-time series). The last time Western played NIU on the road was on Aug. 30, 2004, a 4-0 loss, which was also the first meeting between the two teams.
