Leathernecks Drop Season Opener At Indiana State

The women's soccer team fell to the Sycamores.

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 match against Indiana State during the Aug. 19 season opener. Bianca Romay and Mary Anderson led Western with a two shots each, while Michaela Cody, Nicole Beer, Alexandra Siavelis and Alanna Lalich all recorded one individually.

The Sycamores struck first when Katie Wells scored in the 10th minute off a header received from a cross on the outside edge of the field. The Leathernecks then found themselves in a two-goal deficit when Indiana State's Gaelen Stejbach received a pass and shot it from 30 yards out into the back of the net.

"We got punished on three mistakes and that's what teams that win games do, they force mistakes and are able to capitalize on them," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "Our effort and communication was much improved defensively and I'm confident the girls will continue to make strides as we prepare for Summit League games."

The third and final goal of the match came in the 80th minute, after Stejbach got her second goal after receiving a cross from 40 yards out and scored. Western Illinois recorded a total of eight shots in the match compared to Indiana State's nine, and recorded one save to the Sycamore's four.

Up next for the Leathernecks is their second straight road matchup on Sunday, Aug. 21, against Chicago State.
