Join the Purple Platoon

Purple Platoon will receive various incentives, such as: specialty seating at sporting events, free t-shirt, free prizes and other giveaways, pre-game and post-game socials with Leatherneck teams and coaches, and text message updates and alerts.

The Western Illinois Athletic Department facilitates a student fan group known as 'Purple Platoon'.

The group is open to all Western Illinois University students and membership is free. Purple Platoon will receive various incentives, such as: specialty seating at sporting events, free t-shirt, free prizes and other giveaways, pre-game and post-game socials with Leatherneck teams and coaches, and text message updates and alerts.

Current Western Illinois students with a valid University ID receive free admission to all sporting events.

"The 'Purple Platoon' student fan group is a key part of Western Illinois University Athletics. Our strong military background as the Leathernecks lends to the concept of our own platoon of student fans. The definition of 'Purple Platoon' is a unit of fans strategizing to WIN the battle or game. The support of our students is essential in the success of our 19 Division I programs," said Michael Jones, Assistant Athletic Director for Development.

The crowning element of the Purple Platoon is the Purple Platoon Rewards App. Students have the ability to download the app to their smartphone and earn points by attending athletic events. Points are then used to unlock prizes like free Western Illinois gear and giveaways from sponsors. The more athletic events that students attend the better prizes that can be unlocked.
