MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University mourns the passing of Garry Johnson, former Vice President for Student Affairs and a devoted friend and supporter of Leatherneck Athletics. Johnson passed away Sunday evening, Oct.25, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, generosity and a deep commitment to the students and university community he served.
Johnson was inducted into the Western Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in October 2025, a meaningful recognition of his lasting impact on Leatherneck Athletics and the countless opportunities his leadership helped create for student-athletes.
Throughout his tenure as vice president for Student Affairs, Johnson brought thoughtful leadership and a genuine commitment to the success of Western Illinois students. He understood that the college experience extended beyond the classroom and the playing field, and he worked to ensure Leatherneck student-athletes had the resources and support needed to thrive academically, athletically and personally.
His leadership helped bring significant improvements to Western Illinois University's athletic facilities, including $5.5 million in renovations to the east side of Hanson Field football stadium, $1.4 million for the turf field and scoreboard, and important investments in coaches' offices, locker rooms and other athletic enhancements.
While these improvements strengthened the physical home of Leatherneck Athletics, Johnson's impact reached far beyond buildings and facilities. His work behind the scenes helped shape the experience of student-athletes across all sports, creating an environment that valued achievement, opportunity and the development of young people. His dedication reflected a belief in the power of college athletics to build character, strengthen community and create lasting memories.
Johnson's connection to Western Illinois and its student-athletes continued long after his service in university leadership. He and his wife, Margie, were charter members of Leatherneck Legends, a giving society affiliated with the Leatherneck Club. Through their continued support, they demonstrated a shared commitment to the future of Leatherneck Athletics and to the students who proudly represent Western Illinois University.
Johnson's induction into the Western Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in October 2025 celebrated a legacy that had already touched so many aspects of the university. It was a fitting tribute to a man whose influence was often felt behind the scenes but whose contributions will endure for generations of Leathernecks to come.
As the Western Illinois University community remembers Johnson, his legacy lives on in the facilities he helped improve, the opportunities he helped make possible and the student-athletes whose experiences were enriched by his dedication. Above all, he will be remembered as a caring and committed member of the Leatherneck family whose service made a lasting difference.
The university extends its heartfelt condolences to Margie Johnson, their family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with Garry. May they find comfort in the many lives he touched and the lasting legacy he leaves at Western Illinois University.
