Women's Tennis Picks up Second Straight Win over Quincy

Leathernecks defeat the Hawks, 5-2

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's tennis team picked up it's second straight win in as many days with a 5-2 victory over Quincy University Tuesday afternoon (April 19). With the win, the Leathernecks move to 6-11 on the year while the Hawks move to 10-10.

Things got off to a rough start for the Purple in Gold in doubles play as Courtney Lubbers and Jenna Wallace (No. 1 doubles) and Maria Bessmertnaya and Maya Sykes (No. 3 doubles) dropped their respective matches by identical scores of 0-6. Arianna Demos and Nicole Jones were able to pick up the win at the No. 2 position by a score of 4-3, but it was not enough as Quincy claimed the doubles point.

The Leathernecks bounced back during singles play. After dropping the first set 4-5 at No. 1 singles, Lubbers took the second set 7-5 to force a tiebreaker where she eventually won 6-3. It was a similar story at the No. 2 position as Bessmertnaya won the first set 7-5 but dropped the second 2-6 to move to a tiebreaker. Bessmertnaya was able to emerge victorious with 6-0 decision.

At No. 3 singles, Demos defeated her Quincy opponent 6-2, 7-5. Jones and Wallace were easily able to defeat their opponents 6-1, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. Sykes was unable to pick up a win at No. 6 singles as she fell by a score of 6-2, 6-1.

Western will be back in action this weekend (April 22-23) as they travel to Omaha, Nebraska for a pair of Summit League matchups. The Leathernecks will take on Omaha on Friday with first serve set for 7 p.m. On Saturday, Western will wrap up the regular season with a contest against South Dakota State at 12 p.m.
