Leathernecks Cruise Past Green Bay, 5-2

Western Illinois knocks off Phoenix in nonconference action

GALESBURG, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's tennis team took to the courts Sunday (March 6) afternoon, as the Leathernecks hosted Green Bay in nonconference action. The Purple and Gold won early and often, cruising to a 5-2 victory over the Phoenix in Galesburg. Western improves to 3-6 (0-1 Summit) on the season with the victory while Green Bay falls to 0-8.

The Leathernecks got going early as Western claimed doubles victories at the No. 1 and 2 positions to secure the doubles point. The doubles team of Courtney Lubbers and Maria Bessmertnaya took to the top No. 1 court where they picked up a 6-4 victory over Hermann/Pedersen. Western collected the first point of the afternoon when Nicole Jones and Arianna Demos defeated Headford/Berg, 7-5, in the No. 2 spot. Western's No. 3 team of Jenna Wallace and Maya Sykes fell 6-1 in their match.

Western carried its momentum into singles action where WIU picked up four victories. Lubbers made quick work at No. 1 where she cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Bessmertnaya took care of Londre at No. 2 as she claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Wallace kept the momentum going when she nearly shutout Maria Neff at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1. After dropping the first set of her No. 4 singles match, Jones rebounded to take the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4 for the fifth WIU victory.

Demos nearly claimed the first set at No. 3, but ultimately fell, 7-6, in a tiebreaker. The sophomore recovered to take the second set 6-4 before ultimately falling in the third and final set, 6-3. Sykes battled at the No. 6 spot, but fell 6-2, 6-1.

The Leathernecks get a week off before taking on Missouri State on Saturday, March 12. First serve in Galesburg is set for 12 p.m.
