Women's Tennis Falls to Bradley

Leathernecks will open Summit League play next Saturday

PEORIA, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's tennis team took on the Bradley Braves on Friday (Feb. 26) in Peoria, Illinois where they dropped a 7-0 decision. With the loss, the Leathernecks fall to 2-5 on the year.

"We are improving. We won one of the two doubles and battled much better than in the past in the singles as well," said head coach Mirko Bjelica. "It still wasn't enough to get us over the hump, but we are getting there."

In doubles action, the Braves had an early advantage after they took the No. 3 doubles spot by default. Bradley also took the No. 1 spot over Courtney Lubbers and Maria Bessmertnaya, 6-2. The Leathernecks bounced back in No. 2 doubles as Arianna Demos and Nicole Jones defeated their Bradley opponents 6-3.

In singles, Lubbers battled but fell 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. Bessmertnaya (6-2, 6-1), Demos (6-3, 6-1), Jones (6-2, 6-0), and Jenna Wallace (6-3, 6-2) all fell at the No. 2,3,4 and 5 spots, respectively. Bradley was able to claim the No. 6 point by default.

Western will open Summit League play on March 5 against IUPUI in Indianapolis, Indiana. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m. CT.
