Women's Basketball Falls 66-52 At IUPUI

Western Illinois' six-game winning streak snapped on the road.

INDIANAPOLIS – A 6-for-25 shooting performance from beyond the arc plagued the Leathernecks in their 66-52 loss on Saturday (Dec. 31) at IUPUI.

The Leathernecks fell into a 26-18 hole after IUPUI's Sydney Hall hit four straight threes to give the Jaguars a quick spurt.

Western Illinois ended a 7-0 Jaguar run early in the second quarter following a Michelle Farrow 3-pointer, cutting the deficit to eight at the 6:15 mark. Before the half, Western was able to slice IUPUI's lead at 29-24 after Mallory Boyle found Emily Clemens on a cut to the basket. The Jaguars, however, jumped back to a 33-24 lead at halftime.

"It definitely hurt us that they got off to such a hot start," said head coach JD Gravina. "It's tough to play catch up against a good defensive team like that. Our matchup zone kept us in the game, but we just couldn't get hot enough on offense to make a run."

The Leathernecks opened the third with a putback by Morgan Blumer, followed by a cross-court pass from Farrow to Clemens to put the score at 36-29 in favor of IUPUI. Western kept the game in single digits, but another 3-pointer by IUPUI's Hall made it a 47-38 contest entering the fourth.

An Olivia Braun jump hook inside the paint dwindled IUPUI's lead to seven, but Hall responded with her seventh 3-pointer of the game to make it a 10-point game.

IUPUI's lead increased to 15 following a jumper by Jenna Gunn at the 5:01 mark. With under a minute to play in the game, the Leathernecks fell behind 66-50 following a pair of free throws by Danielle Lawrence. Braun was able to drive in the lane for a layup as time expired, which made the final score 66-52. With the win, IUPUI improves to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in Summit League Play.

"Our aggressiveness on our attacks was definitely an issue. We let their physicality in defense dictate where we attacked with the ball," said Gravina.

Blumer's 17 points and eight rebounds paced Western Illinois (11-4, 1-1), while Clemens followed with eight points, six rebounds and five assists. Farrow also had eight points to go with two assists.

IUPUI was led by Sydney Hall's 22 points (7-for-8 from three), followed by Mikale Rogers' double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds to go with three blocks. Danielle Lawrence recorded 16 points, six rebounds and five assists and Jenna Gunn also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Western Illinois opens the New Year with a Jan. 5 matchup against Denver inside Western Hall. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT).
