Volleyball Swept by IUPUI Friday Evening

Leathernecks to honor seniors tomorrow prior to 7 p.m. first serve against Omaha

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to IUPUI Friday evening (Nov. 11) inside Western Hall. With the loss, the Leathernecks fall to 4-27 on the season (1-14 Summit League play), while the Jaguars improve to 11-19 overall at 8-7 in league play.

"It was a fun environment with our ROTC, service men and women and Hometown Heroes being here tonight and we appreciate everyone coming out," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We definitely saw moments of the consistency and energy that we know we are capable of, we just weren't able to put it completely together tonight."

Both sides kept it close throughout the opening portion of the first set. Trailing 10-8, Emilee Dechant and Shalyn Greenhaw recorded back-to-back kills to tie the match at 10-10. The Jaguars then pulled away with a 4-0 run that was stopped by a kill from Riley Schumacher to make it 14-11. A 5-2 IUPUI run made it 19-13 and forced a Western Illinois timeout. Greenhaw came down with a kill to make it 23-17, but Western couldn't hang on as the Jaguars took the opening set 25-17.

IUPUI got off to a fast start in the second set as they opened a 10-5 lead. A kill from Melanie Patenaude and two Jaguar errors put the Leathernecks within two, 10-8. Down 16-10, Western went on a 4-0 run to pull within two points, 16-14. It was all IUPUI after that as they went on a 7-1 run that Western couldn't stop as they fell 25-18 in set two.

Western kept things close in the third frame. After falling behind 7-4, Greenhaw and Schumacher recorded consecutive kills to trail by one. After IUPUI extended its lead to 13-10, Western went on a 3-0 run to tie the set at 13-all. The Jaguars then went on a 4-0 spurt to pull back ahead 18-14 and another 3-0 run later in the set to lead 21-15. Makenzie Bouse recorded a service ace late in the third set, but it couldn't get Western's momentum rolling as they fell 25-19 in set three and 3-0 in the match.

Patenaude led the team with 10 kills. Hannah Walker dished out 14 assists while Bouse had 13. Kaili Simmons led the team with eight digs.

The Purple and Gold close out the 2016 season tomorrow evening as they host Omaha for Senior Night. Prior to the 7 p.m. matchup, Kaili Simmons and Krishna Merriman will be honored.
