Western Illinois Plays Host To South Dakota

The women's soccer team faces the Coyotes in its second Summit League match.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team plays host to South Dakota on Sunday (Oct. 2) at 12 p.m. live on ESPN3. The match will be the Leathernecks' second straight at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

A LOOK AT YOUR LEATHERNECKS: 
Western Illinois sits at 2-7-1 overall following a 1-0 loss to Denver last Friday (Sept. 30). The Leathernecks will aim for their first win in Summit League play this season.

Freshman Bianca Romay leads the team with four points overall this season (two goals). She and fellow freshman Emily Bollman each have a team-high five shots on goal this season. Mary Street ranks second on the team in points this season (3) with one goal and one assist.

In goal, Jennifer Currie started in Western's last match, recording four saves against Denver, tying her previous season high (Sept. 25 vs. Missouri State).

A LOOK AT THE COYOTES:
South Dakota enters this Sunday at 1-10-1 overall. The Coyotes are 0-1 against Summit League competition, falling 0-2 at IUPUI (Sept. 30). Their lone win came Aug.19 over Idaho (1-0), and tied UC Riverside 1-1 on the road Aug. 26.

Corey Strang leads South Dakota with five points this season on two goals and one assist. At the helm of the Coyotes program is head coach Mandy Green, who is in her seventh season with the program.

SERIES HISTORY: 
Western Illinois trails the all-time series 2-4-1 against South Dakota. The Leathernecks and Coyotes have split their matchups within the past four years, with South Dakota winning 4-2 on Oct. 25 last season. The last win for Western happened Nov. 2, 2014 at home (4-3). The lone tie happened Aug. 22, 2010 (1-1), which was also the first meeting between the two programs.

LOOKING AHEAD:
The Purple and Gold will hit the road for two straight matchups against South Dakota State (Oct. 7) and North Dakota State (Oct. 9).
