Leathernecks Fall to Sycamores at ISU Classic

Western Illinois closes out play Saturday (Sept. 19) against Valparaiso, Chicago State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Western Illinois volleyball team, fresh off its second consecutive victory, was looking to make it three straight Friday (September 18) as the Leathernecks opened play at the Indiana State Tournament. The Sycamores, tournament hosts, got the best of Western as the Leathernecks dropped a 3-0 decision. WIU falls to 2-10 on the year while Indiana State moves to 9-4 on the year.

"Tonight was definitely a missed opportunity for our program," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We weren't dialed in throughout the match, and have to finish that third set when we were tied at 23. I continued to see moments of good play, and look forward to bouncing back tomorrow."

It was the Sycamores who got out to a quick start in the opening set, as they claimed a 25-14 decision over Western Illinois. The teams remained close in the early portions of the set, as Peyton Crosser's kill from the assist of Abby Skryd pulled the Leathernecks within two at 6-4. From there, Indiana State was able to go on a run to build a 13-4 advantage. From there, WIU was never able to get within eight points of the home team, despite a pair of consecutive kills from Jordan Jackson late in the set.

In the middle set, Western battled with Indiana State through the first half of the set. WIU opened on a high note, as Skryd started the set with a solo block on the right side. The Leathernecks used 5-2 run to even the score at 10-all thanks to two Crosser kills and a Jackson kill out of the middle. Western's momentum couldn't be sustained, as Indiana State was able to tally seven consecutive points to take a 17-10 lead. The Leathernecks battled down the stretch, but ultimately dropped a 25-16 decision as the two teams headed to the intermission.

A rejuvenated team took the court in the third set, as the team opened on a 10-2 run, forcing a Sycamore timeout. After spotting ISU the first point in the set, Crosser tallied back-to-back kills to get the run started. Crosser recorded a third kill midway through the set, and seven Indiana State errors aided the Leatherneck run. Indiana State answered, and evened the score at 15-all, forcing a Leatherneck timeout. As Indiana State was able to build a 19-17 lead, the Leathernecks had one final run in them. Lexi Kolschefski's pair of kills on consecutive plays sparked what would become a 6-0 Purple and Gold run. Crosser, Reilly Dunne, and Kolschefski followed with kills of their own, and an ISU attack error ended the run. At that point, Western led by a 23-19 margin, but Indiana State finished with six unanswered points to take the set, and the match, 25-23.

Crosser led the Leathernecks with nine kills, while Skryd dished out 21 assists. Kaili Simmons tallied 11 digs to anchor the back line.

Western returns to action Saturday (September 19) as the Leathernecks close out play at the ISU classic. WIU will first face Valparaiso at 9 a.m. (CT) before ending the day with a 3:30 p.m. match against Chicago State
