Errors Prove Costly as Leathernecks Fall to Braves

Western Illinois fell 10-8 to Bradley in nonconference action on Tuesday (March 31).

PEORIA, Ill. – Western Illinois dropped a midweek game to Bradley, 10-8 on Tuesday (March 31). The Leathernecks are now 11-13 overall in 2015.

"Bradley is a good hitting ballclub and they always have been," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "It's tough to keep them off the bases. Offensively, we got out to an early lead but we just had some mental mistakes that allowed them back in the game."

Lia Romeo doubled home Teagan Walsh from first base to give Western an early 1-0 lead into the top of the first. The Braves responded with a two-out rally that plated a pair of runs, putting Western behind 2-1 heading into the second.

Nina Maggio sparked a four-run second with a one out double off the center field wall and stole third base. Taylor Messer collected her first hit and RBI of the year with a single down the left field line. After a Karissa Kouchis single, Sammy Marshall tripled, scoring both runners. After the Braves made a pitching chance, Walsh collected her second hit of the day with a double to right, giving Western a 5-2 lead.

Bradley got one back in the bottom of the second, but the Leathernecks responded, thanks to a bases clearing triple off the bat of Walsh to push the Leatherneck advantage to 8-3 as the game entered the bottom of the third.

Kirkpatrick struck out two batters to end the bottom of the third inning for Western, but a home run and a double brought Kacyee Hart into the game with two outs in the fourth. Hart forced a ground out to end the inning, with the Purple and Gold leading 8-4. The Braves added another home run in the fifth, before scoring five times in the sixth to take a 10-8 lead.

The Leathernecks put a runner on in the seventh, but a diving catch by the Braves' second baseman ended the game.

Hart took the loss, moving to 5-6 on the year. The junior allowed three earned runs on six hits. Walsh finished 3-for-4 from the plate and a home run short of the cycle. The senior also drove in four runs for the second time in three games.

Western looks to regroup on the road on Thursday against Big Ten foe, Iowa. The game in Iowa City is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
