Western closes out home portion of schedule with Summit League defeat to Pioneers

GALESBURG, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's tennis team closed out the home portion of the 2015 schedule Sunday (March 29) morning, as the Leathernecks played host to Denver in Summit League action. The Pioneers got the best of the Leathernecks, as the Purple and Gold dropped a 7-0 decision in Galesburg. Western fell to 3-18 (0-5 Summit League) on the season while Denver moved to 8-7 (1-0) with the victory.

Denver opened the match by sweeping the doubles point. The duo of Courtney Lubbers/Jenna Wallace dropped a 8-2 decision at the No. 1 spot while Arianna Demos/Nicole Jones fell, 8-1, in the No. 2 position. The No. 3 match was forfeited in favor of Denver.

In singles action, the Pioneers swept all six matches en route to the victory. Wallace was in position to take the first set of her No. 3 singles match against Evy Van Genechten as she led 4-2 in the first set. Wallace couldn't maintain the momentum as she eventually lost the set, 6-4, before dropping the second set, 6-0. Demos battled at the No. 2 position, dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Julia O'Loughlin. Lubbers maintained her place atop the singles lineup as she squared off against Sonja Radosevic. The reigning Summit League 'Player of the Week' was unable to secure a victory for Western as she fell, 6-2, 6-0. Jones (6-1, 6-0) and Andriana Johnson (6-0, 6-0) each dropped their matches at the No. 4 and 5 positions, respectively, and the No. 6 match was forfeited by Western.

The Leathernecks return to action on Thursday, April 2, as they travel to Springfield to take on Illinois-Springfield in nonconference action. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
