EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's tennis team played its third match in two days Sunday (Feb. 8) afternoon, as they faced in-state foe SIU-Edwardsville. The Cougars got the best of the Leathernecks, defeating Western Illinois 7-0. Western moves to 0-6 on the season.
"Our girls are playing better and with more confidence every match," said head coach
Raquel Allen. "I am very proud of the way we played this weekend. We competed well throughout the weekend and our girls are always in every doubles match. I am excited to see how we play next weekend in South Dakota."
SIU-Edwardsville opened the match by taking the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and 3 spots. The duo of
Courtney Lubbers and
Jenna Wallace fell in the top spot, 6-1, while
Jamee Hale and
Andriana Johnson lost a 6-0 decision at No. 3. The match featuring
Arianna Demos and
Nicole Jones at No. 2 was not finished after the Cougars had secured the doubles point.
In singles action, SIU-Edwardsville claimed all six matches in straight sets to complete the 7-0 victory. Johnson fought hard at No. 5, falling by a 6-2, 6-2 decision. Elsewhere, Lubbers, Wallace and Demos all their matches, 6-0, 6-1, in the No 1, 2, and 3 spots, respectively. Jones fell at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0), and Hale was unsuccessful at No. 6 (6-1, 6-1).
The Leathernecks hit the road for a pair of matches next weekend in South Dakota. Western will first compete against Augustana on Feb. 13, with first serve set for 5:30 p.m. Western Illinois will then have its first Summit League match of the season on Saturday (Feb. 14) against South Dakota. First serve between the Leathernecks and Jackrabbits is set for 2 p.m.
