WATERLOO, IOWA - The Western Illinois women's tennis team competed in a pair of dual matches Saturday (Feb. 7) afternoon, taking on Northern Iowa and Milwaukee. The Leathernecks dropped a pair of 7-0 decisions to fall to 0-5 on the season.
Western opened the day against the hosts Northern Iowa, and the Panthers opened up play by taking the doubles point. The duos of Lubbers/Wallace at No. 1 and Johnson/Hale at No. 3 each dropped 6-1 decisions. The No. 2 match featuring Jones and Demos was suspended at 4-all as the Panthers had already secured the point.
In singles competition, the Panthers took all six matches in straight sets.
Courtney Lubbers won a pair of games in the first set at No. 1, but ultimately fell 6-2, 6-0.
Jenna Wallace dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 2 singles, and
Arianna Demos fell, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3.
Nicole Jones battled at No. 4 singles before falling 6-2, 6-1.
Andriana Johnson (6-0, 6-2), and
Jamee Hale (6-0, 6-1) both dropped matches at No. 5 and No.6 singles, respectively.
The Leathernecks wrapped up competition against the Panthers of Milwaukee, and competed hard in doubles action to get things going. Lubbers and Wallace nearly pulled off the victory in the top spot before falling to Strub/Colarossi, 6-4. Demos and Jones teamed up at No. 2 doubles, falling 6-2. Milwaukee swept the point with a 6-0 victory over Johnson/Hale at No. 3.
In singles, Milwaukee claimed all six matches in straight sets. Lubbers and Wallace each dropped 6-2, 6-1 decisions at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Demos and Jones each lost 6-0, 6-1 contests at No. 3 and 4, respectively. Johnson dropped a 6-0, 6-3 match at No. 5, and Hale fell, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Leathernecks return to the courts Sunday (Feb. 8), as they travel to in-state foe Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. First serve is set for 11:30 a.m.
