Western Illinois' Comeback Effort Falls Short at IUPUI Thursday Night

Garret Covington finished with a game-high 30 points in the loss

INDIANAPOLIS – Western Illinois' comeback effort fell short Thursday evening (Feb. 26) at IUPUI as the Fighting Leathernecks dropped their Summit League tilt to the Jaguars, 71-66.
 
WIU trailed by 17 points with 8:44 to play in regulation before storming back to make it a one possession game late. Western got within three points, but IUPUI capitalized on its free throws down the stretch and the Jaguars were able to hold off the Leathernecks for the win.
 
Western falls to 8-18 overall on the season after the loss and 3-12 in league action, while the Jaguars of IUPUI improve to 10-19 overall and 6-9 in league play.
 
WIU had two players score in double figures led by sophomore guard Garret Covington who finished with a game-high 30 points in the contest, one shy of his career best. The Edwardsville, Ill. native had 25 of his 30 points in the second half on 3-of-13 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 from the three-point line. He also had a team-high seven rebounds, and a team-best three steals.
 
J.C. Fuller, a junior guard from Sioux City, Iowa, was the other WIU player to score 10-plus. Fuller finished with 14 points and a team-high six assists.
 
Senior forward Mohamed Conde tallied eight points and five boards, and freshman forward Dalan Ancrum added six points and two rebounds.
 
As a team, the Leathernecks shot better from long range (60.0 percent – 25.0) and the charity stripe (64.7 percent – 55.6), and the Jaguars were better from the field overall (52.7 percent – 37.1).
 
IUPUI grabbed 44 rebounds in the game compared to Western's 28. The Jaguars also outscored WIU in the paint, 36-18.
 
Western had 10 assists and nine turnovers. IUPUI had 12 assists and turned the ball over 18 times.
 
The Leathernecks wrap up regular season play Saturday night (Feb. 28) at Fort Wayne. Tip is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
