Leathernecks Fall to UIC in Instate Showdown

Western Illinois drops three-set match to Flams in midweek action

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team headed to the Windy City on Tuesday (Oct. 13) evening, as the Leathernecks took on UIC in a midweek contest. The Flames got the best of the Leathernecks in the nonconference match, taking a 3-0 decision between the instate foes. WIU falls to 3-17 (1-4 Summit League) with the defeat while UIC moves to an even 10-10 (3-3 Horizon League).

"We saw good moments tonight. As a collective whole we have continue executing our technique and game plan through a complete match," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "UIC did a good job of keeping things consistent on their side, and we have to be able to match that. As we look forward we bring our focus back to Summit League competition. Getting back in the gym and having two solid days of practice will be very important for our young team. We look forward to being back in Macomb Friday night."

The Leathernecks never found any momentum in the first set against the hosts, as UIC claimed a 25-15 decision to open the evening. Set two was a different story, as the two teams battled in a hard-fought set. The teams came out of the gates trading points in the early going, as consecutive points by the Leathernecks gave Western the early 3-2 lead. Lexi Kolschefski came up with a solo block to add to the scoring effort. UIC would tally five consecutive points to take a 10-6 lead and force a Leatherneck timeout.

The timeout proved effective, as Peyton Crosser tallied a kill from the outside on the ensuing point to pull the Leathernecks within three at 10-7. The Western rally continued, as four straight points from the Purple and Gold would even the score at 15-all, forcing a Flame timeout. UIC tallied a service error and three consecutive hitting errors before Kaili Simmons recorded a service ace to end the run. Following the UIC timeout, the Flames responded with four consecutive points to take a 19-15 lead that would prove to be the difference-maker. UIC would go on to claim the second set by a 25-20 margin to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third and final set featured Western jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead. Koslchefski tallied an unassisted kill on a Flames overpass and immediately followed it up with a solo block two plays later. The pair of Kolschefski points sat on either side of a Crosser kill from Leatherneck setter, Abby Skryd. After allowing UIC to climb back into the set, Western was able to build the lead to four points at 9-5 in favor of Western. Kills from Crosser and Reilly Dunne highlighted the action.

Slowly UIC would claw their way back into the set, eventually evening the score at 14-all, forcing a WIU timeout. UIC took its first lead of the set on the next point, and never looked back as they finished off the match with a 25-21 victory.

Crosser led the way with 15 of Western Illinois' 28 kills. Kaili Simmons recorded a team-best 12 digs, and four Leathernecks (Simmons, Skryd, Crosser, and Morgyn Bullock) recorded service aces on then night.

Western Illinois returns to action this Friday, October 16, as the team plays host to South Dakota State in Summit League action. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. inside Western Hall.
